Retention of the feed structure
Feed of good quality that is appropriate for ruminant animals is at the heart of outstanding animal health and milk yields. When picking up the feed, the unloading equipment must not harm the structure of the feed in any way. The feed structure must be retained in order to increase the rumination activity of the cow. Whether you use a silage block cutter, a self-loader or a self-propelled mixer wagon - all of our various unloading options are engineered such that they leave the structure of the feed intact.
Improved feed quality and high energy:
The energy contained in the silage can only be preserved in anaerobic conditions. If loosened up, the silage may allow oxygen to penetrate. This should be avoided under all circumstances to prevent the silage from reheating. Even small amounts of oxygen can heat up the silage by up to 15 °C or more. This added heat may result in energy losses as great as 0.1 MJ NEL/kg TM. Converted to milk yield, this kind of energy loss may translate to a loss as great as 0.5 L/day and per cow.
Reduced feed losses:
Every reheating of the silage does not only mean a loss of energy but may also render the feed inedible. This would cause your animals to consume smaller amounts of feed. Cows cannot produce the desired amount of milk and remain in top physical condition unless they are presented with feed of the highest possible quality. Clean unloading of the feed also prevents crumble losses, which may occur on the way from the silo to the mixer wagon.
High feed intake:
You can achieve a higher feed intake in your animals by offering them feed that tastes better. The better the feed tastes, the more the animals will consume. However, the animals will like the taste of the feed less if the silage was subjected to reheating. Their feed intake will drop, resulting in deteriorating animal health and lower milk yields. Thankfully, reheating can be prevented by simple means. A first important step is to provide for a smooth and compact cutting surface at the silage!
